SCV Green is a new Land Trust dedicated to open space and land conservation in the Santa Clarita Valley of the Southern California’s South Coast Ecoregion. As its first public event SCV Green will be hosting a Witness to Wildlife event for Patagonia in the San Gabriel – Castaic habitat corridor in Soledad Canyon near Santa Clarita. Partners include the Community Hiking Club, SC Wildlands and Wookey Works Productions.
The linkages forming the South Coast Ecoregion were designed by nature. They were then identified and mapped out by scientists. Now it’s the local community’s turn to decide what these places mean to us and what we want them to be in relationship to the places we live in.
The hike will be a 3 mile program along the Pacific Crest Trail, and will start at the National Forest Service’s Indian Canyon Trailhead at the intersection of Indian Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon Road at 8:30 AM. Activities will be set up along the trail to create an interactive story telling experience with participants. This is designed to develop concepts and ideas for what the habitat corridor is in the imagination of local community members.
This will be a fun day for groups of friends and family and the content generated will be used to raise awareness for this important habitat corridor throughout the region. Light refreshments will be provided at the end of the hike, but participants should bring sun screen, a hat and extra water if needed. The National Forest Service requires a $5 day-pass for parking, which can be purchased at the general store just before the Trailhead on Soledad Canyon Road.
Photos of animals within the corridor are available from Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel.

Make SCV Green Your Valentine!
Art, Wine and Chocolate on February 13, 2010
SANTA CLARITA, CA — January 23, 2010 — SCV Green invites all who love the Santa Clarita Valley’s open spaces and wildlands to an evening wine-and-chocolate reception and silent art auction from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at a Victorian home in Newhall’s Happy Valley neighborhood. The silent auction will feature local plein-air artists’ works illustrating our region’s natural beauty. Plein-air, or “open-air” artists paint outside in a natural environment, rather than in the confines of a studio.
Santa Clarita’s All Corked Up is advising on wine pairings, and tea and coffee will also be available.
While SCV Green hopes both to promote local artists and raise funds for this year’s operating expenses, the group also intends to enlist support for a locally-driven private land trust that will help keep wild places wild, wildlife corridors connected and scenic vistas undisturbed. During the evening, SCV Green board members will give a short talk about the wild lands of the Santa Clara River watershed and what a private land trust can do in partnership with public agencies such as the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the City of Santa Clarita Open Space District.
SCV Green is a new local non-profit land trust and wild land conservation organization, formed to advocate for and acquire undeveloped land in the Santa Clara River watershed, and to promote watershed sustainability and wildlife habitat corridor preservation. For directions to the event and more information, please RSVP to Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel, SCV Green President.
